Have you felt stuck in your equestrian business? While I don’t know your specific situation, there’s one thing I’ve seen horse business owners do over and over that keeps them in a holding pattern, and it’s likely been true for you.
Welcome to the show notes! Remember, this is a brief summary from the How to Market Your Horse Business podcast. You'll want to listen to the entire episode for all the good stuff!
Ever wish you could make more money in your horse business?
Or, dream of a specific barn set-up, plot of land, or flexible lifestyle that allows you to both travel and work?
If you’re not there, or on a clear path to getting there, what’s getting in your way?
Something is clearly keeping you stuck.
And, this one thing is keeping you from …
investing in yourself.
saying no to people you know aren’t a good fit.
using a separate business account for your transactions.
Ultimately, it’s keeping you from believing you can make your big horse business dreams happen.
The good news? It’s completely in your control!
When you make this one mindset shift around your equestrian business, it changes everything.
You’re willing to invest in yourself and your business.
You’re able to say no to the wrong people so you can say yes to the right people. (Good news – that means you’re working with customers and clients you actually enjoy.)
It’s truly a game-changer.
Here it is …
You have to stop treating your business like a hobby. Treat it like a business.
That’s why it’s hard to charge higher prices, invest in that website or coaching program, or be diligent about tracking expenses and income.
It truly boils down to your making decisions about your business as if it’s a hobby rather than a legitimate equine business.
I get it. You started your horse business because you love what you do! You feel lucky to get paid for a hobby you love.
Here’s the reality, though …
If you treat your horse business like a hobby then you run the risk of either burning out or reaching a point where you just can’t do it anymore financially.
It’s time for you to own the title entrepreneur and treat your equestrian business as a business.
Say it with me: “I am the CEO of my equestrian company.”
Now, here’s what that looks like on a practical level.
3 Areas Every Horse Business Owner Should Treat Like A Business
Operations This is basically the day-to-day running of your business.
Finances You should know your numbers and have a way to create reports to help you dive into what’s most profitable in your business on any given day. (And yes, having a separate account just for your business is a non-negotiable.)
Marketing Marketing yourself as a business doesn’t have to mean you spend a bunch of money on ads. It really has more to do with making the choice up-front you have a product or service that’s valuable and will help horses and their people and so you share about it. It also means you make the choice to find a plan that works for you and stick with it.
Of course, you'll want to listen to the full episode to dig into each of the insights and discover how you can apply each one in your horse business!
