With more than 200,000 YouTube subscribers at the time of this episode, Ryan Rose (Ryan Rose Horsemanship) has learned a lot about growing a horse business on YouTube through the years. Today, he’s sharing lessons learned and pro tips for fellow equestrian entrepreneurs.
Welcome to the show notes! Remember, this is a brief summary from the How to Market Your Horse Business podcast. You'll want to listen to the entire episode for all the good stuff!
You’re here because you’ve either been considering a YouTube channel for your horse business or you have one and it’s not performing as well as you’d expected.
Before we dive into the practical and strategic advice around growing your horse business on YouTube, ask yourself this: Should you even consider YouTube as a part of your marketing strategy?
If you’re looking purely at the numbers, it’s a resounding yes.**
YouTube has over 2.5 billion monthly active users as of 2024. This huge user base means that YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world.
YouTube is available in over 100 countries and supports more than 80 languages
70% of the watch time is due to the advanced recommendation algorithm. (In other words, YouTube is good at showing viewers related content they’d like to see.)
The average YouTube viewing session duration is around 40 minutes.
AND creators take home approximately 55% of the revenue generated on their channels. ***
My encouragement isn’t necessarily to publish on YouTube from the perspective of just making money. Instead, consider bringing your horse business onto YouTube from the perspective of building your brand and bringing more of the right people into your business that will become your clients and customers.
Yes, as you serve your audience well, your channel may grow and you may become a creator who’s making a healthy income from your content. Either way, if you keep your audience at the forefront, you can’t lose.
Important Note: I am not encouraging you to consider YouTube by adding more to an already full plate. It’s not possible for you to do all things and be all places and still thrive.
Instead, find out where your people are and where your interests and skills intersect that, then focus your efforts on that.
Remember: If you dilute the focus, you dilute the results. (Rory Vaden)
Pro Tips for Growing Your Horse Business on YouTube with Ryan Rose
Get qualified first.
Meaning, before you go online and give advice to others as an expert, you should put in the hours and work necessary to be sure your advice is coming from a qualified expert.
Be committed.
Ryan shared about the endless days and hours of building his channel in the evenings after his “regular” work day training horses. When he started to consistently post videos on YouTube, that’s when he saw the impact and numbers grow.
You have to feed it.
The algorithm works great and in the favor of creators but it’s your job as a creator to continue to feed it content to serve up to viewers. His advice is to post a minimum of one video per week.
Don’t fear competition. (See it as collaboration.)
Ryan has generously helped fellow horse business owners with their channels, even when others might see them as “competition.” He enjoys collaborating and believes it will have a domino effect on the equine industry and each other’s channels the more eyes they each get on their content.
Let it be simple.
You don’t have to have a complicated set-up to publish on YouTube. He started out with just his phone. Ryan said viewers will forgive you for the quality of your videos when there are issues but they’re not quite as forgiving when it comes to audio. If you’re going to invest in anything tech-related, start with audio.
Keep the Conversation Going
If you want to make the most of your YouTube presence, invite people watching to continue the conversation with you off of YouTube. Ryan does this by way of Patreon. I recommend you also have a free resource available you can promote in every video.
A free resource can be low-risk for viewers and still provide immense value while helping you build an email list of qualified leads for your products and services.
Two free resources if you don’t have a lead magnet, or yours isn't converting:
Freebie Creation Guide for Equestrian Entrepreneurs: Get your step-by-step roadmap to create & deliver a valuable freebie (AKA lead magnet) that will build your email list and jumpstart your email marketing!
Of course, you'll want to listen to the full episode to dig into each of the insights shared and discover how you can apply each one in your horse business!
